Canadian student and athlete Terry Fox was diagnosed with bone cancer at the age of 18. His right leg was amputated above the knee and he had to live with an artificial leg. The suffering of children who were diagnosed with cancer struck him and he decided to raise one million dollars for cancer research with a sponsor run from east to western Canada. On April 12, 1980, he began his ‘Marathon of Hope’ in Newfoundland. Terry ran 40 km every day. After 5373 km in 143 days, he had to stop because of the spreading of the disease.
Right before his 23rd birthday, he died while he had raised more than 22 million dollars. After Terry’s initiative, Terry Fox Runs are organized every year, at more than 5,000 venues worldwide whereby the total amount raised is donated to the national (local) cancer foundation. Up to present, these Terry Fox Runs have collected some CDN $300 million.
This year, the 25th edition of the run will take place.
